About
Dr Christian Maaser completed his medical training at Philipps University Marburg and the University of Hamburg. In 2006 he became board certified in Gastroenterology, and in 2011, became board certified in geriatric medicine. In 2014, he obtained a position as Head of the gastrointestinal (GI) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) outpatient department and Head of the Department for Geriatric Medicine, University Teaching Hospital Lüneburg, Germany.
Dr Maaser’s research interests include clinical and diagnostic studies in IBD; multicentre, as well as investigator-initiated, clinical trials with a focus on bowel ultrasonography and immunoprophylaxis; IBD in the aged patient; the role of intestinal epithelial cells in the mucosal host defence; the functional role of human intestinal endothelial cells; and the potential of the melanocortin system and its related peptides for the treatment of IBD.
Dr Maaser has been the President of the German working group for IBD (DACED) since 2012. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the German IBD Study Group. In addition, he is the Chair of the International Bowel Ultrasound Group, a member of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO) Educational Committee, and reviews for a number of peer-reviewed journals.
