Fraser Cummings

Clinical Lead for IBD and Honorary Associate Professor, Consultant Gastroenterologist

About
Dr Fraser Cummings was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and clinical lead for the adult inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) services at University Hospital Southampton (UHS), UK, in 2009 following completion of clinical and research training in Oxford. A central theme of his work at UHS has been the ambition to develop an excellent patient-focused clinical service with research embedded in every aspect of the service. Dr Cummings is Principal Investigator in 21 National Institute for Health Research/industry studies. Basic science collaborations are focused on micro-RNA function and the epithelial barrier, and how our current treatments influence these. Clinical research has more recently focused on the outcomes of biological therapies including developing a managed switching programme to change patients with IBD from originator infliximab to a biosimilar.
In 2010, Dr Cummings was appointed Clinical Lead for the National IBD Registry. Key elements of this role have included the definition of the registry dataset and outcomes, the development of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Registry patient management system, and the integration of the dataset with ongoing IBD audits, including the biologics audit. He is a member of the UK IBD Standards group, the UK IBD Audit Implementation Group, and the IBD Audit Biologics Sub-committee. Through this work, and the patient portal project, he has developed an interest in how data can be used to develop new patient pathways and improve the care of patients with IBD.
